Winchcombe is a charming Cotswold town steeped in history and surrounded by rolling countryside. Once a royal borough, it boasts a rich heritage, from its timber-framed buildings to the magnificent Sudeley Castle, the former home of Queen Katherine Parr. With welcoming pubs, independent shops, and access to scenic routes like the Cotswold Way, Winchcombe offers a perfect blend of heritage, beauty, and relaxed rural life.  

A Walk Through History

Winchcombe has a rich and fascinating past, once serving as a royal center for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Mercia. The town's legacy can be seen in its distinctive architecture, with a mix of honey-colored Cotswold stone cottages and beautiful half-timbered buildings lining the main streets. While the once-great Winchcombe Abbey was dissolved in 1539, its influence lives on in the town's layout and in fragments of stone that can be found in other buildings. You can learn about the Town's incredible rich history at the Town Museum. 

No visit to Winchcombe is complete without exploring Sudeley Castle and Gardens, a short walk from the town centre. This magnificent castle has a thousand years of history and is the final resting place of Queen Katherine Parr, the last wife of King Henry VIII. You can wander through the castle's award-winning gardens, explore the historic rooms, and enjoy the stunning views.

A Walker's Paradise

With a Walkers are Welcome status, Winchcombe is a gateway to some of the most spectacular walks in the Cotswolds. The town has The town sits on the famous Cotswold Way National Trail, a 102-mile route that offers stunning views from the surrounding escarpment. Other notable walking routes, such as the Winchcombe Way, radiate from the town, leading to fascinating sites like the Neolithic burial chamber of Belas Knap and the peaceful ruins of Hailes Abbey.

Local Delights and Unique Finds

Winchcombe's High Street is a delight to explore, with a wonderful array of independent shops, art galleries, antique stores, and tearooms. You can browse for unique gifts, sample local produce, or simply relax in one of the historic pubs. Be sure to visit the Winchcombe Museum, located in the Victorian Town Hall, which tells the story of the town and its people and even displays a fragment of the famous Winchcombe meteorite that landed nearby in 2021. Just outside the town but not to be missed is Winchcombe Pottery which has been making its iconic wares for hundreds of years.  For a nostalgic trip, you can also hop on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, which has a station just outside the town, offering a scenic journey through the countryside.
