The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) offers a nostalgic 28-mile round trip between the outskirts of Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway. This heritage railway, lovingly maintained and operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, provides a unique and enchanting glimpse into the golden age of rail travel.

As the train chuffs along, you'll pass through charming villages, lush green fields, and picturesque woodlands. From your carriage window, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the Malvern Hills and the scenic Cotswold landscape. The journey includes stops at beautifully restored stations, each with its own character and history.

A highlight of the route is the magnificent Stanway Viaduct, an impressive feat of Victorian engineering that offers breathtaking views. Traveling by car

Winchcombe is easily accessible by car and is located approximately 10 miles from Junction 9 of the M5 motorway. It's about a 7-mile drive from the A40, which links to the M40. From Cheltenham, you can reach Winchcombe by taking the A436.

For navigation, the postcode for the town centre is GL54 5HX. There are several car parks available in the town, including a long-stay car park on Back Lane (GL54 5PZ) and a short-stay car park on Bull Lane. Free two-hour parking is also available on Abbey Terrace (GL54 5LL).

Travelling by coach & bus

The Stagecoach W service runs regularly between Cheltenham, Prestbury, and Winchcombe. This is a good option if you are arriving in Cheltenham by train or coach, as it connects directly to the town center.

Pulhams Coaches also operate the Service 606, which connects Winchcombe to other Cotswolds villages and towns, including Chipping Campden, Broadway, and Cheltenham. This service is a convenient way to explore the area.

Travelling by train

Winchcombe does not have its own mainline train station. The nearest station is Cheltenham Spa, which is well-served by trains from major cities, including London Paddington, Bristol, and Birmingham.

From Cheltenham Spa station, you have a couple of options to complete your journey to Winchcombe:

  • Bus: The most direct and convenient option is to take a local bus. Both the Stagecoach W and Pulhams Coaches Service 606 operate regular services from Cheltenham town centre, which is a short bus ride from the train station.

  • Taxi: Taxis are readily available at Cheltenham Spa station for a direct trip to Winchcombe. The journey is approximately 15-20 minutes.
